This one-day educational seminar is a mandatory part of the international adoption process in Alberta, designed to prepare prospective adoptive parents for the unique challenges and responsibilities of adopting a child from another country. This requirement applies to all international adoptions, including relative adoptions. The seminar offers practical, emotional, and cultural guidance to ensure families are well-equipped for the journey ahead.

The purpose of the seminar is to provide adoptive parents with a foundational understanding of the international adoption process, including important procedures related to provincial requirements and Canadian immigration. Participants will gain insight into the emotional and developmental needs of adopted children, particularly those who may have experienced early adversity, trauma, or time in institutional care. The seminar also addresses the importance of cultural awareness and how to support a child’s identity in a transracial or transcultural family. Topics such as attachment, ethical adoption practices, and the long-term support needs of adopted children are also covered. By the end of the session, families will have a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to prepare, both practically and emotionally, for international adoption.
